Design For Impact

2021 – Adobe Illustrator

I was tasked with designing a poster to that brings more awareness to an important current issue. The issue I focused on was the rise in domestic violence amidst COVID-19 lockdowns.

To begin, I researched the increase in domestic violence & intimate partner violence that was occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic. My primary sources of information were UNWomen.org and the Canadian Women Foundation. It was the later website that supplied me with the most information, as the Signal for Help was widely spread throughout Canada in early 2020 before gaining more exposure in the United States.

I created a mood board that showcases the different design elements I wanted to incorporate into the poster, such as the color purple, a spotlight, and the shape of hands.

After gathering my references, I used Illustrator to put them together. I experimented with different spotlight colors, effects, typography, and poster sizes.

My final design uses various shades of purple and a spotlight to draw attention to the signal, while also balancing against the typography that shares information about the Signal for Help. I also created mockups for it to be displayed as a sign and on social media.
